Dewey’s 24 Hour Read-a-Thon is Coming Up on Oct 12th

This is the first year I’m gonna be doing the Dewey’s Read-a-Thon and I’m pretty psyched.  I read about it last Oct while it was going on and was really intrigued.  It’s a semi-annual deal – it happens every year in April and October – and I waited till this time around to give it a whirl.  And you don’t even have to read for 24 hours straight!  Like they say in this post you can read for any amount of time you like.  The whole point is just to get more people reading.

So lately I’ve been trying to come up with cool creepy stuff to read – for right now and for the Read-a-Thon – and I came across a whole bunch of cool stuff at the Open Library.  I know ebooks aren’t for everyone – I know didn’t like reading books on my computer at first – but after I got an iPad mini I thought I’d give it another try and I actually really like it.  And the coolest thing I figured out is if you download the PDF version it’s a lot like reading an old, worn paperback.

I was really psyched to find a bunch of those old Alfred Hitchcock anthologies (the search results for Alfred Hitchcock ebooks is HERE).  And there’s pics below of a few that I have borrowed – some of which have library card holders and yellowed pages with water stains!  (i get geeked out about some pretty silly things)

 

I also have an actual copy of one of these anthologies that I have saved to read during the Read-a-Thon too!

Then while I was wandering around yesterday I came across these posts about the art in these really cool ghost story anthologies.  So I decided to see if they had the PDF versions there – and they did!  There are actually 2 books from each series.

Here’s Tales to Tremble By and More Tales to Tremble By – both with nifty end paper and cool illustrations (Open Library search results are HERE).

And here’s Arrow Book of Ghost Stories and Arrow Book of Spooky Stories (search result link is HERE)…

The Arrow books are more on the kids side – but they’re still really cool to read.  And the illustrations are amazing!

If those are already checked out or you want something other than short ghost stories then do your own search.  There’s tons of cool stuff!  I found some older horror books (older is mostly what you’re going to find there ebookwise) like this John Saul book that I remember seeing all over the place when I was a kid…

and a few others.  Open Library is also linked with Internet Archive so you can search from there too and you can check out up to 5 books at a time.  I also have some links in my links tab up there (which is still very far from being complete and organized – ack!) for sites that have older ebook downloads – like Munseys and arouseyourpassion.

So I’m pretty set for the Read-a-Thon.  I’m even throwing in some sexed up pulp to keep things exciting!

I’ll just read what I feel like throughout the day!  I don’t know if I’ll be doing the whole 24 hour thing though.  I’m a pretty big weenie when the middle of the night comes.  Or even the early part of the night for that matter.  But I’m gonna drink lots of coffee or tea and do my best!
